3 Wheeled Go-Kart

by admin on July 14, 2010

First off I would just like to say that I am 16 that this was my grade 10 auto tech year project. I had only been welding for about 2-3 weeks before I started this project. This is my 3 wheeled go-kart. I purchased plans for this cart from spidercarts.com and they have many other simple but awesome plans. I built this in shop class in about 5 months working on it for a bout an hour a day. All of the parts EXCEPT the motor belong to me. The motor in this video is a 6hp, very cheep (0) Chinese built motor that belongs to my school. The governor we suspect is set at a higher rpm then what the clutch is rated at so the clutch was already engaging before the motor was at ½ choke. Also, the throttle position didnt seem to be having an affect on the rpms. I have an 8hp Honda motor at home that is just having some carb issues and I plan to fix it in the summer. I am anticipating some frame modifications to fit the larger motor, and its a good thing that my uncle has a machine shop. This video is just a couple of ¼ to ½ choke runs around my school bus loop. *UPDATE* Thank you everyone for all the views! I just wanted to let everyone know that this project got me a 98% in shop class (highest mark my teacher gives for some reason) and I am receiving an academic award later this month!! Thanks!

oh absolutely. they are probably the best way to make a go kart because it gives you lengths and angles for each piece you need. also it gives a list of the parts you need to buy and roughly how much they should cost. if you want to make one right it is well worth the money for the plans

I am buy ing the scorpion plans aswell, How much hp do you recomend?

MXHondas230 November 5, 2009 at 2:44 am

hey my kart has the same wheels as you. im taking welding and a go kart would be a great project! Ive never actually built one before. im getting a project bike from my uncle for free but theres no welding required in that. if i dont build another kart for a welding class i may take, i may make my 3.5 hp briggs engine and weld it into a giant wheelable 4 stroke chainsaw/watermelon smasher!

what i would do if it was mine is mount the engine like right over the rear tire and move the sat back to you have more leg room

a better idea would be to be more prepared and just make the front part of the frame longer? i think what i might do it build up a bumper type thing just so my feet dont get crushed if i hit something

does in the instructions come with all the measurments?

240zguy240 December 31, 2009 at 6:40 pm

they sure do. it shows you in a 3d image how long to make each piece and what angle to cut each end.

That looks nice! im making one like that but with my designs

sweet man. just make sure you put things together before you weld it to see how its going to fit and everything. you should film it when your done and send me the link!

GREAT JOB!!

That thing is awesome.

wasup23tube February 8, 2010 at 7:05 am

oh man your killing it. that thing is geared way higher. If you took that thing on a downward slope holy shit youd get about 50-60 mph. the only problem is the lack of tourque. let me know how it goes man!

mytitans February 8, 2010 at 7:05 am

nice. looks good. steering wheel/seat looks a bit cramped

MrMechanicjr February 11, 2010 at 12:30 am

bobmamipoko February 22, 2010 at 5:10 pm

thats really impressive. I wish i could do something like that at my own school.

240zguy240 February 22, 2010 at 10:35 pm

whats stopping you dude?

Virrch March 5, 2010 at 11:05 pm

Looking sweet.. Looking forward to see it with the Honda on it if your still planning that.. And a remark on the 98% I’m guessing it would be due to 100% being perfect, and as thermodynamic laws set it, nothing can withstand forever thus being imperfect =) So yea gj idd, keep it up!

not all school alow you to buil what you want, my school we fix lawn mowers and stuff like that

mrsuperhooper March 12, 2010 at 1:08 am

Is that what is known as a “Scorpion”? I saw a website called Spider carts who sells a plan for a kart that looks just like that.

240zguy240 March 15, 2010 at 10:39 pm

@bobmamipoko – Same thing here. I did decide to do something about it however. I am currently building the frame for mine, its modeled after a Campagna T-Rex. Waiting on a 850cc engine for it. Its about 8 feet long, not sure of the width or height. Trying to find sheet metal right now to finish off so its not just a metal skeleton. Full suspension! I need the engine and a few other parts that go on the inside first before sheet metal body goes on though…

BTW, nice video and Go-Kart!

I just purchased the two seater plans, it has room for tons of improvements that I plan to make, only to make it easyer and cheaper, It`s easy to do when you have plans, I built one of my first karts 30 years ago with no plans at all by my self with a 350 motorcycle motor on it, to bad we didn`t have camcorders back then, I didn`t thank I would like the three wheeler but after seeing yours I like it, you did a good job…

ourtube4u June 26, 2010 at 3:43 pm

I don`t know if you have considered it or not but a torque converter drive would give you more take off and top end, but, I know it cost more. I also built the personal tracked vehicle from the plans that you may have seen on here and I made alot of changes on it.

I am thinking about buying those spidercart plans, I was just wondering if it came with dimensions and if it is too small for someone who is 5 foot 10 inches.
